I’ve arrived on Jeju Island today from Busan, and checked in at my first hotel (staying at 3 over the next 4 nights, 5 days). I will have a post up about my stay in Busan, but I thought I would get started on Jeju first. Just because.
I took the subway to Gimhae 김해 Airport from Haeundae 해운대 where I had been staying. It is quite a few stops away, but its the most convenient – especially since I wanted to save time and cash for Jeju. Look at all the people waiting for their plane!
First stop was to check in at Benikea Hotel in Aewol (애월). My friend recommended stopping by here, and apparently a lot of celebrities are moving to Aewol, and travelling to Seoul when they have any activities. Considering that its only a few hours by plane, I can understand the decision – peace, quiet, and less people to bother them. Anyway, I got a room with an ocean view, and its pretty impressive.
Please ignore the fly screen. The hotel room is nice and simple, and most importantly, very clean. The bed is a bit soft for my liking, but then again, I usually sleep on the floor. The bathroom is very nice and modern too, and the hotel supplies towels, shampoo and body wash, as well as a hair dryer. There’s a large flat screen TV, a kettle, and a bar fridge in the room too. I’ve travelled light, and only want a place to rest my head, so this is more than satisfactory and I’m looking forward to a good night’s sleep tonight.
The next place I headed to was the 애월 한담공원 Aewol Handam Park. Its a short taxi ride away from my hotel, and whilst the taxi driver who dropped my off here wasn’t so pleasant, the one that took me back to the hotel was wonderful. Anyway, it was a lovely place to walk along the beach in the late afternoon.
Cute tower of rocks – there were heaps of these around all over the walk path. Have you ever seen these on a Korean TV show before?
After all the walking, I was getting pretty thirsty. There are a few coffee shops around, but a lot of people were going to this place, so I decided to follow them.
몽상 드 애월 – Mongsang De Aewol – Cafe Monsant. Whatever this place is called, apparently it is owned by Big Bang’s G Dragon – or so my taxi driver told me. I’ve looked it up, and yes, it is G Dragon’s cafe. However, its not blatantly covered in his image – unlike the Dudart Cafe which is very obviously AOMG – which was nice. The design of the building is very cool, and the view is pretty fantastic too.
I was waiting for the sun to set, but unfortunately there were clouds on the horizon today, so it kind of just faded away in a poof of clouds. Still, it was nice to watch the sun go down with a hot cup of coffee in hand.
If you ever want to visit, the address to give your taxi driver is: 제주특별자치도 제주시 애월읍 애월리 2546. Or ask for the Big Bang cafe I guess.
They got a relatively wide range of beverages, as well as a small selection of desserts and snacks. Since this is on the west side of the island, I would recommend coming in the late afternoon to take advantage of the amazing views.
Later in the evening, I stepped out of the hotel to take a photo of the view at night:
Not too bad – its a lovely quiet area, and the views are amazing! I wouldn’t mind coming back here again. Although it might be nice if I was brave enough to drive in Korea…
I’m looking forward to a full day of exploring tomorrow – I’m hoping to visit O’Sulloc and Innisfree, and if weather permits, a waterfall or two. Will keep you posted, and take many more photos – stay tuned!
